Threat of Excessive Housing North of Houghton Regis
This has been one of our main issues over a number of years. The current threats are:-
- The link road from the A5 to the new junction 11a on the M1 will be part funded to the tune of £45m by developers and in return they will want to fill much of the area north of Houghton Regis up to our boundary with 7,500 houses
- Government changes to planning law that say “the presumption is YES” to any application.
- Central Beds final plans for a “Development Strategy” due later this year. Our view is we need low cost and social housing for local people without excessive growth.
- The draft strategy calls for 31,000 new homes between 2011 and 2031 with 57% of all construction on green belt land
