Chalgrave News Issue 50 – March 2016

Issue 50, March 2016.

The latest issue of the Chalgrave News (Issue 50, March 2016) is now available to view here, or browse past issues.

Welcome to the 50th edition of the Chalgrave News!! The 1st edition, in its present format, was published in the Spring of 2002 and here we are, fourteen years later, still going strong.

Time rolls on and Christmas may seem just a distant memory. Luckily, you can rely on the News to revive those memories because it’s in the March issue that we cover the many events of the festive season. So you can read here about the switching on of the lights in St Mary’s Close, the Senior Citizens’ Christmas Lunch, carol singing in The Plough and the visit to Chalgrave by Santa and his band of elves. Relive Christmas in this issue!
But we’re not just reporting on Christmas. In the pages that follow there is an account of the latest Chalgrave Beer Festival, the fourth in a series organised by the Friends of the Queen’s Head. Plus, we also record an attempt by The Plough to assist in breaking a Guinness Word Record. As well as that, we have a fascinating article about Hallworth Farm, the home of Robert and Kate Flitton, which reveals a remarkable story about the farmhouse and Rob’s ancestors. And then Julia Marsh, owner of Chops (or should that be the other way round?) has written about another high-spirited porcine rebel who goes by the name of Pickwick. Elsewhere, our local economist, Peter Warburton, discusses the problems associated with traffic lights, and our local vet, Peter Harding, relates how his sense of humour has landed him in trouble. Naturally, we also have the usual informative and entertaining articles and comment from our regular team of indefatigable writers.

Don’t forget that between now and the next issue, the News will be holding its popular Annual Quiz. More details are to be found on page 41 but, with a fish and chip supper thrown in, it’s good value at only £9 per person – and there’s always the chance of your team landing the first prize of £100. Please help the News to keep going by supporting our Quiz.
