Expect Delays With 3 Months of A5 Roadworks

Drivers are being warned to expect disruption as three months of roadworks on the A5 are poised to get underway.

The work will begin on Monday, October 26 and is expected to finish by January 22. It is dependent on suitable weather conditions and will be carried out during the week between 8pm and 6am and may include some weekends.

The first phase will focus on the northern part of the A5 between Hockliffe and Sheep Lane and the A505 roundabout to Tebworth. It will involve resurfacing, replacing road markings and installing new signing as part of safety improvements at Tebworth Turn. While the road is being resurfaced, the A5 between the A5/A505 and A5 Little Brickhill will be closed in both directions and traffic will be diverted via the A505, A4146 and A5. Local residents who require access will be escorted past the roadworks.

Last month, Highways England announced £2.4million worth of improvements will take place across Bedfordshire providing smoother and safer journeys for drivers. Highways England project sponsor, Mindy Bhogal said:

This work will not only improve safety but will provide road users with a better driving experience. The white lines will also be more visible, improving driver safety. We understand this scheme will cause some disruption for drivers and are carrying out the work overnight to reduce the impact. We have planned this work carefully to minimise the inconvenience to road users, but I would urge motorists to plan ahead and allow extra time in case of any delays.

The second phase will see improvement work taking place to the south of the A5 at Markyate, Abbey Hill, Dunstable, the M1 and A421 towards to the end of the year. More details will be announced in the coming weeks. The improvement scheme is in addition to the work already underway on the Dunstable Northern Bypass.
